True Spirituality – Review
When we first accept Christ, life took on fresh and new meaning. In my case, birds were singing and I noticed the sky was more beautiful than I remembered it. In other words, I knew God was here and that he was personal and directly interested in what was going on in the world and in our lives. Life began to take on a sense of adventure.
However, over time life as a Christian became quite burdensome for me as I began to look at how I was performing as a Christian. Instead of focusing on Christ and what he accomplished on my behalf, I became too introspective for my own good.
Largely, this was a result of my limited understanding of Christ’s substitutionary death. When I came across Francis Schaeffer’s book “True Spirituality” and digested the material my faith in Christ was strengthen.
In general, without being too wordy and lengthy in the details, this book helped to establish me in the truth that Christ paid for all my sins. Not just the sins before conversion, but the ones I commit daily and will commit in the future. In other words, Christ paid for our sins past, present, and future. He made atonement for all of them, not one was left out.
The second half of the book deals with what he coined as freedom and “substantial healing” in our consciences, thought-life, psychological problems, personal relationships, and relationships within the Church. The redemption we have in Christ affects all of life, and He is redeeming all of our life. There is is not aspect of our lives as Christians that the influence of Christ’s life in us does not touch.
This is definitely a book worthy to read and consider both for new and maturing Christians.

Well said sir. I look forward to reading it!
Sounds good…..does he have a book called “then how shall we live?”
I have heard it referenced from time to time. I need to read some of his stuff for sure. Take it easy.
Andy, yes he does. I’ve read some of it, and he deals a lot with western culture and the influence Christianity has had on it. However, his commentary on Romans “The Finished Work of Christ” and “True Spirituality” are the best, I think.
